The End of the World is Just the Beginning by Peter Zeihan | 2022 Book Reviews (#10)

I listened to this on Audible, and I’m fairly certain it is Zeihan himself who reads it. And Zeihan is a good writer. An engaging writer for what could have been a very dry subject. He’s humorous and punchy at times. But also sober and clear.

The subtitle of the book is Mapping the Collapse of Globalization, and that’s what it is. Zeihan is clearly an expert in his area of geopolitical strategy. Filled with stats, trends, economic and political data, Zeihan’s work here is extensive and comprehensive. His analysis might be summarized as global markets are going to go away because America is no longer going to be the World Police, protecting trade routes and maintaining global peace, since the Cold War is over. However, given America’s geography and natural resources, she isn’t going to be inordinately affected. He does predict famine in certain parts of the world. And at the very least shows how the break down of global markets is going to significantly, if not traumatically, change everyone’s life to some extent.

Doug Wilson gives some good interaction with the book here.

It’s an interesting book. I’m not particularly susceptible to being alarmist about things. I believe the Lord will provide for His People or provide a way of escape. So, I’m not worried about the dire predictions. “For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s.” (Romans 14:8) Some people will think my statement here of trusting in the Lord means not to prepare at all. That’s not what I’m saying, but I would encourage prioritizing unseen things to seen ones. Do your best to prepare, but also know that the Lord feeds the birds of the air, and you are much more valuable than they.
